Angela Cater's Pet Portraits & Illustration

Character Cat Gallery - pre 2000
Here you will find a selection of the earliest Character Cat paintings.
Sadly, most of the models are no longer with me, but their memory lives on in these
pictures which were mostly inspired by their very unique characters.
Rainy Day Molly
Molly seldom did outdoors - unless it was absolutely chucking it down, and preferably really cold and windy too. Then she wouldrace outside, when I really wanted the door kept shut. She'd return 10 minutes later, soaking wet, her short stubby legs clarted up with mud and moaning because I couldn't or wouldn't change the weather for her.
Mystic Mog
British visitors will know that this title is a word play on the name of the famous and eccentric astrologist "Mystic Meg". This is probably one of my favourite pictures of tortoiseshell Molly.
Pirate Bill
Bill was a very striking looking tabby who belonged to my friends, Terry and Liza. In 1999, Bill had to have a hind leg amputated due to a tumour. I was determined that his should not be the end of his modelling career. I had great fun painting this swashbuckling pirate, and it is one of my favourites.
Fisher Cat Jet
Jet was one of my all time favourite cats and lived 3 years with me before his death of feline leukaemia and AIDS. He always knew that he looked gorgeous in yellow, and would arrange himself against a yellow background at any opportunity. In the later days of his illness, we fed him on boiled fish. He seemed a perfect choice for this yellow-clad fishercat. As he was from Yorkshire, I depicted a Yorkshire fishing village in the background.
The Knitted Stocking
This was my mother's cat "Minnie" and was painted before my mother discovered it is a male cat. I had great fun painting the many daisies on the dress, as well as the patterns on the cushions and curtains. However, I began to wonder what I had started with the detail on the stocking! Cowboy Cat
Morgan modelled for this portrait. I love painting small detail and had fun with this checked shirt.

Sailor Sam
This was one of the first Character Cats that I created and feedback from visitors suggest that it is one of the most enduring and popular too. Little did I know at the time, that one day I would illustrate two children's picture books about Sailor Sam and that there would be future kittens named after him!
